Ken-Dee community projects share £24,000 from Galloway Glens small grants scheme

Seven community projects along Ken-Dee glen have claimed a share of a £24,000 funding pot.

The cash was awarded through the latest allocation by the Galloway Glens small grants scheme.

Administrator Jude Crooks said: “This was our fourth funding round.

“I’m looking forward to working with the range of community groups that have received an award.

“We have a £100,000 budget for the small grants scheme and so will be advertising the next funding round in the near future.”

In the awards, Propagate CIC, based at the The Mill on the Hidden Road by Loch Ken, topped the charts with £5,000.

The group will provide courses and training on agro-ecological land management, organic food growing and low carbon solutions.

Balmaclellan Community Trust scooped £4,913 towards installing a heritage display in the village hall.

Once completed, the social and educational resource will showcase the rich history of Balmaclellan and its people.

Elsewhere, Carsphairn Community Woodland Ltd was granted a £4,885 contribution for its project to purchase 49 hectares of woodland at Muirdrochwood forest.

The money will support the installation of visitor amenities, picnic benches, noticeboard, compost toilet and
wildlife hide.

Glenkens Community and Arts Trust (GCAT) received £4,015 for a project to cast a bronze replica of the locally found Balmaclellan Mirror.

The precious artefact, which dates from the first century AD, is currently on display at the National Museum of Scotland.

The replica will be a permanent exhibit at the Balmaclellan Smiddy.

Kirkcudbright Community Tennis Club got a £2,000 helping hand to replace the tennis court surface, while Gaidhlig Dumgal was awarded a similar sum for its project to compile and publish the papers from the successful 2018 “Galloway, Gaelic’s lost province” conference at the Catstrand.

Making up the list of successful bidders was the South West Dry Stone Dyking Association, which netted £1,800.

The cash will help fund a drystane dyking competition at Threave Estate in September 2021.

In all, 22 awards have been made so far, totalling more than £75,000.
