Kemar Roofe's World Cup dream as Rangers star tops list for international side

In-form Rangers star Kemar Roofe could receive an international call up for Jamaica after being identified among a clutch of UK-based players who are eligible to represent the Caribbean nation.

The Reggae Boyz have not qualified for the World Cup since 1998, but Jamaican Football Federation president Michael Ricketts is hopeful an influx of new internationals either born or playing their football in Britain can help boost their chances of reaching Qatar in 2022.

Roofe is in the process of applying for his Jamaican passport, enabling him to represent the country, and could be joined by one-time Celtic target Ivan Toney - who has hit 25 goals for Brentford in England’s Championship.

Bayer Leverkusen wide man Demarai Gray and Everton’s Mason Holgate have also been identified by Ricketts, who played in the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough.

And he is confident he can convince players including the Ibrox favourite to switch their international allegiances, telling Caribbean TV channel SportsMax: "Looking at the list, I see Andre Gray, I see Demarai Gray, I see Issac Hayden who called the JFF to express his desire. He called.

"Mason Holgate, Liam Moore has actually acquired his Jamaican passport. Nathan Redmond, Kemar Roofe and Ivan Toney.

"All of these, we are in the process of acquiring their Jamaican passport. The process has become a little tedious because of the Covid pandemic but the process is ongoing and we are hopeful we'll get the passport for these gentlemen in reasonable time.

"I just spoke with the permanent secretary for sport and he has agreed to help us facilitate and expedite the process."
