Kemar Roofe's Rangers appeal thrown out as four game ban leaves Steven Gerrard with big Champions League absence

Rangers forward Kemar Roofe will miss both of his side's Champions League qualifiers next season after UEFA quashed an appeal from the Scottish champions.

Roofe was handed a four-game ban by the European governing body for his high tackle on Slavia Prague goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar during the Europa League last 16 second leg in Glasgow.

The Czech player received a nasty facial injury and now plays with a head guard after the incident.

However, Steven Gerrard and the Ibrox hierarchy believed four matches was a harsh sanction and decided to appeal.

UEFA are pressing on with the original punishment after confirming on Monday that Rangers' attempts have been unsuccessful.

A statement from UEFA read: "The appeal lodged by Rangers FC has been dismissed. Consequently, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body’s (CEDB) decision of 13 April 2021 is confirmed.

"The CEDB had decided to suspend Rangers FC player, Mr. Kemar Roofe, for four (4) UEFA club competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible, for dangerously assaulting another player."

With Rangers entering the Champions League at the third qualifying round in 2021-22, Roofe would miss both legs of the two ties required to reach the group stage.

There is no update on the appeal regarding Glen Kamara, who was banned for three matches for an altercation with racist Slavia defender Ondrej Kudela after the match.

Kudela was handed the minimum 10 match suspension for his vile discriminatory behaviour, when he was found to have called Kamara a "f****** monkey".
