Kemar Roofe reveals Rangers 'hurt' that continues to motivate league quest as he offers Christmas Day insight

Rangers goal hero Kemar Roofe insists his side are still using their shock cup exit to St Mirren as motivation to get the second half of their Premiership dream over the line.

The English forward has been deployed in a number of attacking remits but against St Johnstone on Wednesday night his job was to be a goalscorer first and foremost.

And he did his job in the 24th minute, reacting first to the rebound from Ianis Hagi's shot which was spilled by Saints goalkeeper Zander Clark.

Glen Kamara and Hagi added strikes of their own to complete a comfortable 3-0 away win, their second in succession since the bitter 3-2 loss in the Betfred Cup in Paisley last week.

And Roofe insists that defeat still spurs him and his team-mates on to continue their unbeaten first half of the league season, a 19 game stretch that has generated a massive 16 point lead.

He told the Rangers website : "It was a massive three points away from home.

"We knew it was going to be a tough, physical game and I thought we matched that and let our quality show as well.

"I played as a 'nine' against St Johnstone and one of the main jobs as a 'nine' is to play within the width of the goals and be ready, and as soon as someone shoots, be ready for the second ball.

"You never know if the keeper is going to drop something so you have to be there, and thankfully I was.

"We are taking it game by game and we needed the three points there. It all stems from the St Mirren defeat as well - that still hurts us and it has given us an extra boost to keep pushing."

Christmas is just another day in the world of football and Steven Gerrard will be putting his side through their paces ahead of a Boxing Day battle with Hibs.

The Hibees are one of just two teams - the other being Livingston - to take points off the ruthless Light Blues so Roofe insists preparation is key.

He added: "We will need to prepare right as if it is not Christmas, as if it is just a normal day and we go again on Boxing Day, simple as that."
