Kemar Roofe returns but Barry Douglas is out - how Leeds United could look against Birmingham City

Injuries continue to play havoc with Leeds United's season.

With Kemar Roofe on the way back, Marcelo Bielsa thought he would have a full fit squad to chose from for the first time in West Yorkshire this weekend, only for Barry Douglas to be ruled out for the campaign.

Scans have confirmed that the Scot has suffered a ruptured medial knee ligament, an injury which has a two-to-three month recovery time.

And while Douglas has struggled to oust Gjanni Alioski from the starting left-back berth in Bielsa's side, Douglas showed what he can contribute by providing the assist for Luke Ayling's goal at the weekend.

Leading scorer Roofe is set to return to the first-team picture following a seven-week absence of his own after he damaged knee ligaments during February's win over Swansea.

His return to the squad gives Marcelo Bielsa a decision to make regarding his attacking options.

With the Leeds United back-four likely to be unchanged, here are a few options that the Bielsa can opt for in order to incorporate Roofe on his return.

Roofe as the impact sub

The first option is for Bielsa to leave the team largely untouched. It's highly likely that Kiko Casilla will replace Bailey Peacock-Farrell in goal after he completed his one-match suspension against Millwall.

Bielsa has recently spoken about how he prefers not to tinker with his teams, so this XI offers continuity and will also give Roofe extra time to work his way back to full match fitness, which could be a factor given there are no under-23s games for him to have a run-out in.

The 26-year-old would then be a dangerous option to have on the bench.

Roofe in, Bamford out

Patrick Bamford admitted that he had 'an off day' against Millwall and after he missed his first-half penalty, very little of what he did would come off against the Lions.

The summer signing has not scored for three games now and while it's too early to start worrying about a drought, Roofe's energy and movement could offer something different at St Andrew's.

Roofe as the enganche

Should Bielsa look to include both Roofe and Bamford in his side, he may opt to go for the formation that was utilised against Middlesbrough and Swansea back in February.

This saw Bamford lead the attack, with Roofe in the playmaker role behind him. That would mean dropping Tyler Roberts, which is somewhat harsh given his recent form and the fact that he laid on the assist for Pablo Hernandez's winning goal against Millwall on Saturday

Have your say

What do you reckon? Throw Roofe back in straight away or keep it as it was?
