Kemar Roofe hit with SFA charge as Rangers striker risks ban for St Johnstone tackle

Rangers striker Kemar Roofe has been hit with an SFA charge after his high challenge on St Johnstone’s Murray Davidson.

The Englishman caught his opponent high on the shin with studs showing as he tried to shield the ball at Ibrox on Wednesday

The referee deemed the challenge worthy of only a yellow card but the SFA retain the right to examine footage and take retrospective action.

Manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Roofe has indeed been charged for serious foul play and now waits to find out whether he'll be given a ban.

A fast track hearing will take place on Tuesday February 9.

Gerrard explained: "I haven't had time because the notice of complaint came through 10 minutes ago.

"Which is quite frustrating because we've had two sessions to prepare for Hamilton and he (Roofe) has been heavily involved in both sessions.

"So in terms of having a think and deciding what we're going to do as a club we'll do that in due course.

"In terms of the tackle I haven't really thought much of it because I thought the referee dealt with it, he was five yards away and he's obviously seen the incident and given a yellow card.

"Only up until 10-15 minutes ago we've had this decision thrust upon us, so we've got until Monday, the end of play, to decide what to do.

"So we'll take our time and decide what to do from there."

The Rangers star was defended by St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson after the match.

While the Perth gaffer acknowledged the tackle was bad, he insisted there was no intent to hurt his player.

Davidson said: "It’s one of those, I don’t think there was any malice in the challenge, but it doesn’t look great.

“TV pictures will slow it down and make it look worse than it is."
