Kelvingrove Park shut down after police swoop in to break up mass gatherings

Officers are dealing with an ongoing incident at Kelvingrove Park.

Police helicopters were spotted overhead and police cars were seen racing to the west end of the city just after 6.30pm this evening.

One eyewitness told Glasgow Live: “I was walking on Kelvinway and saw there was a huge police presence - there must have been at least 10 police cars plus the helicopter.

"Police were telling everyone to get out of the park and said it was completely shut."

Another eyewitness said: "I was having a family barbecue and we were no were near it and were told to leave park. The police are still there, streets are full of people now. This happened on Saturday as well."

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.

UPDATE: Inspector Lesley Docherty, of Partick Police Office, said: “The regulations remain that people should only leave the house for very limited purposes, for example for basic necessities, for exercise or recreation, for medical needs or travelling for work which cannot be done from home.

"The Chief Constable has made it clear that we are asking people to take personal responsibility to do the right thing and remember the purpose of these measures is to aid the collective effort to stay safe, protect others and save lives by preventing the virus from spreading.

"Our officers will continue to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance and encourage compliance. We will use enforcement as a last resort only where there is a clear breach of the legislation."
