Kelvingrove Park gates to be guarded by police and council officers today to stop public drinking

Police and council officers will be guarding the gates of Kelvingrove Park today for the first time since strict new measures came into force.

In a bid to curb anti-social behaviour and mass gatherings, only six gates to the park will be open.

They will be manned to make sure that no alcohol is taken into the public space.

People carrying alcohol will either be asked to leave or be given the option of dumping it in specially provided bins before entering.

It's anticipated that the West End park will be busier than usual today as temperatures across the city are due to hit 26C.

Any visitorswe will be channelled through six entry points at key locations to the north, south, east and west of the park.

Council bosses have told the public that "everyone is welcome to come and enjoy Kelvingrove Park, but alcohol should be left behind."

Anyone found drinking alcohol in the park is liable to receive a fine from the police.

Under current guidance by the Scottish Government, up to 15 people from five different households are allowed to meet up outdoors with social distancing.

Superintendent Ross Allan said: " Police Scotland is working closely with Glasgow City Council to prevent repeated incidents of antisocial behaviour from occurring in Kelvingrove Park.

"Officers will be visible and accessible to park users should they need police assistance.

"We would like to remind anyone planning on visiting the park that alcohol is not permitted and, should incidents of antisocial behaviour take place, then those responsible will be dealt with robustly."
