Ex-Burton Albion footballer Kelvin Maynard has been shot dead in Amsterdam.
Dutch police have launched a manhunt after the 32-year-old was gunned down in the Langbroekdreef district of the city on Wednesday night.
Officers said several shots were fired at Maynard’s car from a motorbike carrying a rider and passenger. Maynard was in the car on his own.
It is thought Maynard tried to escape his attackers by driving to a nearby fire station.
However, he crashed into the building and could not be resuscitated, De Telegraaf reported. The suspects fled the scene.
Maynard played for Staffordshire club Burton in the 2014/15 season.
He was one of the first players signed by then-manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in November 2014, and helped the club to promotion from League Two as he played nine times and scored one goal.
His contract was extended to the 2015/16 season, but Maynard didn’t play competitively for Albion again as he was struck by a serious injury. After leaving the club in 2016, he returned to Dutch football.
Burton said in a statement on Thursday: “Everyone at Burton Albion Football Club is saddened to learn of the tragic death of our former player Kelvin Maynard at the age of 32.
“Our sympathies go out to all his family and friends at this difficult time.”
