Kelly Preston not seen in public for 2 years as she battled cancer in secret

John Travolta 's wife Kelly Preston had not been seen in public for more than two years prior to her death.

The actress, 57, passed away on Sunday after a secret battle with breast cancer.

She chose to keep her health battle quiet and stepped out of the spotlight back in 2018.

Her last public appearance came in the summer of that year, when she accompanied her husband to the premiere of their gangster film Gotti in New York.

The outing, on June 14 2018, was the last public event she attended.

She spent much of that summer promoting the movie, in which John played real life mobster John Gotti and Kelly portrayed his wife Victoria.

The previous month, the pair attended the Cannes Film Festival to unveil their film in May 2018.

It became Kelly's final movie project and the last time she was seen onscreen.

While she stopped attending public events, Kelly was seen in the occasional snap on social media.

She was last pictured hugging her family in a sweet selfie that she posted to Instagram in June as they celebrated Father's Day.

The actress captioned the image: "Happy Father’s Day to the best one I know, we love you."

Although it's not known when Kelly fell ill, she's said to have been undergoing medical treatment for "some time" according to a family statement.

The sad news of Kelly's death was confirmed this morning with a family representative telling People.com: "On the morning of July 12, 2020, Kelly Preston, adored wife and mother, passed away following a two-year battle with breast cancer.

"Choosing to keep her fight private, she had been undergoing medical treatment for some time, supported by her closest family and friends.

"She was a bright, beautiful and loving soul who cared deeply about others and who brought life to everything she touched.

"Her family asks for your understanding of their need for privacy at this time."

John added: "It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer.

"She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many.

"My family and I will forever be grateful to her doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, all the medical centers that have helped, as well as her many friends and loved ones who have been by her side.

"Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered."
