Kelly Oubre Jr. picks new jersey number with the Golden State Warriors

After officially joining the Golden State Warriors on a trade from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Kelly Oubre Jr.’s next step with his new team is finding a jersey number.

Last season, Oubre Jr. laced up in the No. 3 jersey for the Phoenix Suns. With No. 3 claimed by Jordan Poole, the newest member of the Warriors is going back to his roots.

With a post on his Instagram, Oubre Jr. shared a photo of his locker with the No. 12 featuring in the picture. In the caption, the 6-foot-7 wing had “12 Back” listed. During his start in the NBA, Oubre Jr. wore No. 12 with the Washington Wizards. Before his time in the NBA, Oubre Jr. also wore No. 12 at the college level with the Kansas Jayhawks.

Prior to recently waived point guard Ky Bowman wearing No. 12 in his rookie season with the Warriors, Andrew Bogut wore the number during his tenure in the Bay Area. While rooming the frontcourt from 2013-2019, the former No. 1 overall pick out of Utah wore the jersey.

Along with Bogut and Bowman, other members of the Warriors to wear No. 12 are Bimbo Coles, Mike Gale and Ish Smith.

Two of Golden State’s draft picks have also landed on their new jersey numbers. No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman is slated to wear No. 33 and second-round pick Nico Mannion will wear No. 2.

Oubre Jr., Wiseman and Mannion will have the first opportunity to suit up in their new threads when the Warriors open the 2020-21 season at the end of December.
