Kelly MSP fears parliament is being sidelined

Scottish Labour MSP James Kelly has raised concerns that parliament is being sidelined during the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week, Mr Kelly missed out on asking a question in the chamber after the time for the session ran out.

He went on to raise a point of order regarding the time available to raise constituents’ issues during these sessions.

He said: “There is not sufficient time being given to MSPs to raise concerns with the government.

“Over the past few weeks my office has been contacted by a large number of people raising various concerns  and questions about the current situation. The reality is that as it stands, I am limited in my ability to raise these issues.

“People throughout Cambuslang and Rutherglen expect me to raise these concerns on their behalf, instead time has been too short and these issues are not being addressed.

“The Government has brought forward debates on Agriculture  and Consumer issues instead of COVID-19.

“It is not good enough, especially with plans to return to business as usual over the coming weeks.

“I expect the Presiding Officer to give serious consideration to the programme to ensure that vitally important issues such as PPE and testing can be discussed properly.”
