The former partner of a pregnant woman who was stabbed to death has “accepted responsibility” for the killing.
Aaron McKenzie, 25, is to undergo psychiatric assessments and has not yet entered a formal plea to any charges.
He stands accused of murdering 26-year-old Kelly-Mary Fauvrelle, who was eight months pregnant at the time, and the manslaughter of her baby.
Her son, Riley, was delivered at the scene of the stabbing in Thornton Heath, south London, but died in hospital four days later.
Mr McKenzie has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon.
The Old Bailey heard that McKenzie “takes responsibility for the death” of Ms Fauvrelle.
Judge Nicholas Hilliard QC, the Recorder of London, added: “In terms of responsibility for the killing, there is no dispute.”
Prosecutors told Wednesday’s hearing that Ms Fauvrelle was stabbed after Mr McKenzie entered her home on 29 June.
Family members including her mother, two brothers, sister and her sister's baby son, were all in the house at the time.
Mr McKenzie, of Peckham, was remanded in custody ahead of a plea hearing on 2 October.
The defendant wore a black tracksuit in the dock and spoke only to confirm his age and British nationality.
A provisional start date for his trial has been set for 2 December at the Old Bailey.
