Kelly Clarkson to 'date herself' on first Valentine's Day since bitter divorce began

Kelly Clarkson says she is taking herself on a date for Valentine’s Day as she prepares to celebrate the annual event for the first time since the collapse of her marriage.

The 38-year-old American singer married talent manager Brandon Blackstock in October 2013 and together the pair share two children.

But their marriage came to a shock end last year – with their split announced last June and a bitter divorce playing out in the months since.

Now the Since U Been Gone singer is advocating fellow singletons take time out for some self-care as the annual celebration of love takes place on Sunday.

Speaking on her TV show, Kelly said: "We all know that we don't need someone by our sides to live our best lives.

“To date myself, I'm a mom of little tiny tots, so I love, literally, having a glass of wine, put the fireplace on in my bedroom and I read a book or I watch some Netflix.

“Or I literally just hang out with my girls. I love that."

During the course of her show, Kelly also reflected on some of the worst dates she has endured in the past.

She said: "I dated this guy, and I think because I'm a singer-songwriter, if you date people [who are musicians], they feel like, 'Oh, I'm gonna write her a song.' And, don't."

Kelly recently explained that co-parenting six-year-old daughter River and four-year-old son Remington with her estranged husband has been “tough” as divorce proceedings rumble on.

She said: "It's tough...I know with me and Brandon, it's just a difficult thing because we're in different places, and it's like, we both agree on the main things, but it's a hard thing when you're not together all the time.”

She added: "As long as you make sure it's about the children and their best interests, then we're both on board."

Kelly won primary custody of her two children in November last year.
