Kelly and Dave are most common names among prison population

Britain's jail cells are crammed with Kells... well, people called Kelly to be precise.

The name – shared by stars like Ms Brook, Ms Clarkson and Ms Osbourne – is the most common moniker among female inmate, figures show.

Dave is top among male lags and Smith – unsurprisingly – is most-used surname.

The Ministry of Justice recorded 74 inmates called Kelly at 12 jails as of December 31, 2019.

There were 59 named Lisa, 58 Sarahs and 52 Emmas. And there were plenty of Michelles amidst the 3,830 women in cells – 46. Among the 78,710 male prison population there were 1,956 called David across 105 prisons.

Figures from jail admin systems show there were 1,885 named Michael. Blokes named John, Daniel and Paul were next with 1,555, 1,514 and 1,430 respectively.

Along with the 990 Smiths, the Jones, Williams and Brown clans came next with 641, 568 and 432 apiece.

The list points to favourite names from yesteryear – typically 30 to 40 years ago.

Top baby names last year included Olivia, Sophia and Lily for girls and Muhammad, Noah and George for boys. Neither Kelly nor David made the top 20.

The jail stats are subject to data entry and processing errors, the MOJ said.
