Kellie Harrington's family fight back tears of joy after Dubliner reaches Olympic final

There were emotional scenes in Dublin's north innner city on Thursday morning as one of their own booked her place in an Olympic final.

Kellie Harrington defeated Thailand's Sudaporn Seesondee in her lightweight semi-final and will now face Beatriz Ferreira of Brazil in Sunday's gold medal fight.

People poured out of their homes in Portland Row following the bout to celebrate Harrington's remarkable achievement.

She will now go on and try to emulate Katie Taylor's historic gold medal success at the 2012 Games in London.

Speaking to RTE, Harrington's mother Yvonne said: "I'm just over the moon. I can't even talk really.

"I'm just delighted for her. I'm really delighted for her and for everybody around, the whole neighbourhood. It's after cheering up the whole neighbourhood. They've been very good. They're such good supporters."

Her dad Christy added: "Kellie has done the business. She's carried the flag proudly and we're just so proud of her. It's priceless. Absolutely priceless. She's a gem."

Meanwhile, Harrington's brother Joel said commented: "She's in dreamland but this is for years ago when Kellie had a fight that didn't go her way and the tears were shed and all the times she sat in the kitchen crying to me da, it's for her coaches who put endless work into her, it's for the women on the corner.

"There's not a lot to be happy about at the moment, now there is. Now there's a buzz on the road, now the country is lifted. Look at it, it's everwhere, it's Olympic fever.

"Kellie didn't get here three weeks ago. Kellie got here 10, 12 years ago. It's been a lifetime's work for her and she's getting what she deserves."
