Kellie Harrington opens up on 'draining' side of popularity following Olympic gold medal win

Kellie Harrington has revealed some aspects of her Olympic gold medal success have been 'draining' as she prepares to return to training.

The Dubliner took a well-deserved break from boxing following her win in Tokyo, saying she has almost become a "part-time athlete/ full-time councillor" in that time.

Harrington admits that people are extremely nice when coming up to her, but says it can be a bit 'draining' listening to people's personal stories over and over again.

Speaking on Virgin Media's Ireland AM, she said: "Everyone wants to pull out of you, everybody's so nice and so lovely, but everybody has to tell you their story. You're nearly like part-time athlete/ full-time councillor now.

"It does get a bit draining so you do need to be very specific with what you do with your time.

"Sometimes I just want to sit on the chair, drink tea, drink coffee, eat cakes and just watch telly galore and not open the door, mix with my family and friends, get out and walk the dogs and just enjoy being normal."

When asked if she had come back down since that huge win, Harrington said she never really went up.

She explained: "People keep asking me that same question all the time. I don't really know if I even went up to be honest with you.

"Obviously I've never won an Olympic medal before, I don't know what way to feel. I just feel normal, very, very normal."

Harrington made her community and the country as a whole extremely proud as she boxed her way to gold in Tokyo and was blown away by the scenes in Dublin's Portland Row as she returned home.

She said: "I hadn't slept since the fight and I was so tired. I was like 'I wish I could do this another day'. That's no word of a lie.

"As soon as I turned on to the Luke Kelly Bridge and seen everyone just standing all along Ballybough, me and Emmet [Brennan] were just lifted. We just couldn't believe it."
