Kellie Harrington private life from partner to sporting career ahead of Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony

Dubliners will be proud looking at the Olympic opening ceremony today as inner city golden girl Kellie Harrington will be one of Ireland's flag bearers.

The 31-year-old boxer is among Ireland's best medal hopes in Tokyo.

In her sport, Kellie is a powerhouse.

She took gold in the lightweight division at the 2018 World Boxing Championships and was the silver medallist in the light welterweight division at the 2016 Women's World Boxing Championships.

Just last month she won the gold medal at the European Boxing Championships.

She qualified to the Olympics at the beginning of June after beating Maiva Hamadouche in Paris by a unanimous decision.

She is expected to be a strong medal contender in the lightweight division in Tokyo.

The soon to be Olympian grew up on Portland Row in Dublin's inner city and trains at St Mary's Boxing Club in Tallaght.

Kellie has been with her partner Mandy Loughlin for over a decade and the couple have two dogs together.

Mandy also comes from a fighting background and used to box but is now a coach.

Kellie previously said: "Mandy is from Foxrock, but she has lost all that. She's not a Foxrock head any more. I'm from the inner city and proud of it."

The boxer has also been an inspiration outside of the ring.

Kellie is heavily involved in her community and is an ambassador for the north east inner city.

She left school aged 14 and completed her Junior Cert with Youthreach. She joined the army aged 18 but left shortly afterwards after deciding it wasn't the right path for her.

Kellie then joined a boxing club in the inner city and her life turned around.

The world champion works at St. Vincent's Psychiatric Hospital in Fairview at weekends as a cleaner.

Kellie has preached the importance of understanding finances.

She said last year: "It's important to know the value of work and the value of money. You never know what might happen, and then, all of a sudden, you are stuck.

"The hospital is my back-up plan. I enjoy it, and if I had to go back and work there full-time, it would be fine."

Kellie has said that even though she wants a gold medal, being the best version of herself is most important.,

"As long as I'm improving every day, not just in boxing, but in life, then that's the gold standard."

Kellie's first fight will be next Friday, July 30th at 3am Irish time.
