Kelle Bryan tears up as she recalls lupus battle that left her unable to walk and talk

Kelle Bryan fought back tears on Loose Women as she discussed her battle with lupus.

The former Eternal singer was left unable to talk and walk when she battled with the autoimmune disease, which is a long-term condition in which the body's immune system attacks healthy parts of the body.

On Monday's episode of the ITV chat show viewers saw Kelle getting speech therapy as she discussed her diagnosis.

After watching the footage, Kelle was clearly upset, saying: "I don't tend to watch it because it's really painful to watch

"It has been really difficult journey, but it's not just me going through it, thats why I'm here today because there's so many people struggling with lupus."

Kelle has cerebral lupus and had a swelling on her brain, which once caused her to have a seizure in front of her children.

What followed were three days of her life that she doesn't remember.

She also has to stay away from her kids when she they are ill because of her compromised immune system.

When her daughter Kayori had a cold, Kelle caught it and ended up in intensive care with pneumonia.

Kelle's symptoms began in 1998 when she was working on her solo album.

One day she woke up and she couldn't open her index finger, which at first she put down to sleeping in an odd position, but later her whole hand was affected.

Her hair started to fall out and she struggled to speak as she developed ulcers in her mouth.

She struggled to get diagnosed as she believes doctors don't always recognise the signs of lupus, which it's estimated affects five million people worldwide.

Most people think the symptoms are just rashes or joint pain, but Kelle says it can be much worse.

Kelle still stutters even after going through speech therapy.

She described the "struggle of trying to communicate something and not being able to, wanting to have normal conversations with somebody and not being able to get words out.

"To get words to your mouth to have a conversation."

She also has liver and kidney damage, which she thinks if she'd been diagnosed earlier could have been prevented.

Kelle has regular infusions to treat the disease and tests show she is now improving.

She said: "Full credit goes to the NHS. I have an amazing consultant. They've really looked after my care over the last 20 years of my life. I've become stable now.

"Now I have 8-monthly infusions. That keeps me well and healthy, keeps the blood cells under control, so they’re not fighting me to a point where I can’t function.

"That enables me to live a really good quality of life and enables me to do all the things you guys see me doing."
