Kell Brook encouraged to be overweight for Amir Khan fight and pay six-figure fine

Kell Brook has been encouraged to come in over the 149lb catchweight and pay a six-figure fine ahead of his grudge match with Amir Khan.

Brook has publicly expressed his issue with making the welterweight limit at 147lbs in the past and could face a similar issue in making the agreed catchweight with Khan.

However it was revealed that a six-figure penalty has been put in place for either fighter who weighs in over the recognised catchweight limit.

Former cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson believes that the fight will go on irrespective of missing the weight and any weight penalty could "double bluff" Khan.

"That is what they have got to go for," Nelson said to Sky Sports. "I believe that is what they are going to go for.

"But speaking about this weight issue, if it is tight pay the fine. They have to pay the fine because it is one or the other, I know what I think he is weighing and if it will make the difference pay the fine.

"If you come in a couple of pounds over the fight is going to go on because he would have double bluffed him. If you are going to squeeze me down for this I will come in over the weight and pay the fine.

"But my argument is why would you not want to box the best version of each other? But you know what Kell has wanted it this bad, would it be more bragging rights for Kell beating Khan at 147?"

Brook and Khan have long argued over the reasons a clash didn't in their prime.

However Brook was forced to hand Khan the weight advantage in order to make the fight happen with his arguable best weight at around 154lbs.

The pair will now be forced contractually to pay a fine of £100,000 for each pound they come in over the registered 149lb limit.

Despite question marks over his weight cut, Brook believes he was ready around three or four weeks ago.

Brook said: "I am there with the weight, I could have made the weight three of four week ago. I am very comfortable with where I am at, the 19th is right there now.

"I am genuinely happy I am not putting a poker face on, I am just enjoying it all now as I have put the hard work in being away from my family over Christmas.

"It will be all worth it on Saturday night when I have my hand raised high."
