The Rolling Stones have “definite plans” to record a new album in 2016, according to their guitarist Keith Richards.
Speaking at a live Q&A session with iHeartRadio, Richards revealed that the band had made their plans during a recent group meeting in London. He later elaborated on those plans to Rolling Stone, saying: “[A new album] looks closer. Don’t know where, don’t know when yet … We had a little chat. We were just saying, ‘We gotta get in the studio right? Right?’ ‘That’s agreed. Okay, boys, that’s agreed.’ Where, when – [we] scratch our heads.”
It would be the band’s first album since 2005’s A Bigger Bang, and Richards believes it could happen after the Stones complete their forthcoming South American tour in February.
“You never know,” he told Rolling Stone. “We might try to get into the studio before Christmas. I think that’s sort of doubtful, with Christmas being Christmas, all that buildup. But at the same time, it’s definitely in the works.”
Earlier this year, Mick Jagger hinted that the Stones had new material for a potential album. “It would be very nice and I’ve got a lot of new songs and songs I’ve written over the last couple of years,” he said. “I’ve done really good demos for all of them, which I would love to record. So, let’s hope so.”
Richards is currently promoting Crosseyed Heart, his first solo album since 1992. He made headlines recently by saying he’d happily allow his daughters to snort his ashes – a reference to a quote he made in 2007 claiming he had snorted his father’s ashes.
