As the '90s have come back into vogue in fashion, we've seen a parallel movement across interiors. The rich textures and abundant patterns of the period are sneaking back onto our Pinterest boards, not least through the proliferation of the viral, literature-inspired, 'dark academia' trend.
Though the name dark academia is new, the 90s trend is much more than a blip; an archival image of Keith Richards' home library in 1995 is proof.
The Rolling Stone's space is coated in texture from the mahogany walls to the striped blue and red curtain hanging over the window to the velvet lounger in the back corner.
Antique and modern books litter the built-in shelves. Across the floor, a patterned rug offers extra plushness. It's a masterclass in the dark academia interior design trend, before it went viral.

If you have a home library or old-fashioned office, the trend is the ideal fit. 'This trend is perfect for living rooms and studies, as it involves high bookshelves and lots of books,' explains Claudia Kampmann, design expert at Ruggable.
She advises: 'If you want to incorporate this into your home, use nooks and alcoves to create floor-to-ceiling bookshelves with deep mahogany or black wood, then adorn them with your favourite pieces of literature and knick-knacks such as candlesticks, candles, and vintage-inspired framed art.'
The dark academia look also requires mood lighting to set the scene. Claudia suggests: 'Incorporating the proper lighting is also essential if you want to nail dark academia, as you need just the right amount to enhance the dark, moody interior of the room. Think grandeur chandeliers that act as the room's centrepiece, warm lamps, and lit candles.'
She continues: 'Mixing textures is also important to nail the trend, especially luxurious ones like velvet, lace and silk. Velvet pillowcases and throws mixed with draped curtains and fairy lights can create a cosy haven to lose yourself in a book or drift off to sleep, while the introduction of a traditional style rug can tie the colour palette together and make the room come alive.'
