Keith Richards has become a great-grandfather for the first time.
The Rolling Stones guitarist, 82 – whose career has spanned more than six decades – is celebrating the arrival of a new generation after his granddaughter Ella Richards, 30, revealed she had welcomed her first child with her long-term partner Sascha von Bismarck.
Ella announced the birth of her daughter, who she is calling Luna, by sharing the family milestone with fans on social media.
She posted a photograph of herself beside her newborn daughter on Instagram and described the occasion as her “best birthday yet”.
Ella said: “30!! Best birthday yet with our baby girl Luna.”
The announcement marks a significant moment for one of rock music’s most famous dynasties.
Luna is the first child of Ella and Sascha, the photographer son of Count Leopold von Bismarck-Schönhausen and fashion designer Countess Debonnaire von Bismarck.
The birth of Luna’s child means Keith joins his Rolling Stones bandmate Sir Mick Jagger, 82, as a great-grandfather, after the singer became one in 2014.
Keith’s family news arrives during a busy period for the Rolling Stones.
The band, whose catalogue includes classics such as Satisfaction, Paint It Black, Gimme Shelter, Jumpin’ Jack Flash and Start Me Up, continue to attract global audiences more than 60 years after forming.
Recent attention has focused on the group’s new studio album, Foreign Tongues, which featured a contribution from Sir Paul McCartney.
Ella first revealed her pregnancy in March with a black-and-white image showing her baby bump.
At the time, Keith reacted publicly to the news by saying: “Sending love and looking forward to welcoming my first great grandchild!”
Messages of congratulations quickly followed Ella’s birth announcement.
Princess Olympia of Greece wrote about the baby: “The most beautiful.”
Daphne Guinness added: “Happy Birthday! So so sweet @ellarichardsr.”
Ella’s sister Alexandra Richards, 38, also marked the occasion, saying: “Happy happy birthday :) 30s are the best.”
Ella is the daughter of Marlon Richards and former model Lucie de la Falaise.
Her father is Keith’s eldest son from his long relationship with model and actress Anita Pallenberg, who died in 2017 aged 75.
In a previous interview with Tatler, Ella offered a rare glimpse into family life with her grandfather.
She said: “He is very quiet and sweet and loving. He’s a lot more shy than people think.”
Speaking about her unconventional upbringing, she added: “My grandfather used to wear my grandmother’s clothes, and she used to wear his.
“Most of my family are slightly mad and crazy or weird. My whole family are all crazy creatives. No one is academic. Everyone is wild and free-spirited.”
Ella rose to prominence as a model aged 18, appearing in a Burberry campaign photographed by Mario Testino, alongside Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn.
She later joined the Kate Moss Agency and went on to work with fashion houses including Prada, Calvin Klein, Fendi and Valentino.
Discussing her relationship with Kate, who is also her godmother, Ella said: “I feel very lucky to have someone who’s been through it all and can guide me.
“I can go and talk to her about things and she completely understands – I don’t really need to explain anything.”
