Keith Long knows his young Bohemians side must get smarter

Bohemians boss Keith Long believes his young side must learn two important lessons from their last minute loss to Dundalk on Monday night.

Long was left devastated that, having frustrated the league leaders for most of the game, they conceded a last minute penalty to lose for the second time in five weeks at Oriel Park.

The Gypsies were 1-0 up until Rob Graydon - a 40th minute sub for goalscorer Danny Grant, who sufffered a hamstring injury - was sent off after a second bookable offence in the 54th minute.

Then Long felt compelled to take off another sub, Ali Reghba, after he was booked.

"He was pumped up," acknowledged Long.

"I don't think we had too many arguments about the double yellows, to be honest.

"Maybe the referee could make an allowance, but we need to learn from that, obviously. There are a lot of young boys in the dressing room.

"Ali could've been sent off as well so even though we make the substitution, we have to try and make sure that we don't go down to nine men.

"I felt it was the right thing to do, to get him out of the firing line, because I think the next challenge that was mis-timed, the referee would have given him the second yellow card.

"It would have meant we were down to nine and our backs would have been up against the wall even more."

So a lack of discipline proved costly - but Long believes Bohs were naive, too, which they must also learn from.

"Robbie McCourt had a chance in the 90th minute or just into injury time," recalled Long.

"Danny Mandriou was fouled and he probably should go down. If that's a Dundalk player, they go down. That's experience, that's know-how.

"We probably have to quickly learn that side of the game.

"Robbie McCourt should score. I think his legs probably gave up on him a little bit.

"But maybe we can be a little bit cuter in that scenario - that when there is contact, maybe Danny can go to ground".
