Keith Long hits out at fixture schedule after his Bohemians side's stalemate draw with Derry City

Bohemians boss Keith Long pointed the finger at the packed fixture list and said more respect needs to be shown to players after Bohs' drab 0-0 draw with Derry City on Monday night.

All ten Premier Division teams played their second game in four days last night, with another game coming up for all of them this Friday.

Long, who was missing a large chunk of his squad with injuries and noted that the Candystripes had travelled "around 900 kilometres" in four days, blamed the watertight schedule on the lethargic display.

And he urged his fellow clubs to present the issue to the FAI.

"I think, as a league, we need to start showing a little bit more respect for the players," Long told Eir Sport after the game.

"We can't keep continuing to ask our players to play Friday and Monday.

"But it's down to the clubs. We need to extend out the season. We need to make our season a little bit longer, make our off-season shorter."

A longer season would see longer contracts, adding potentially more financial stress for clubs.

But Long argues that the clubs are fooling themselves into a "false economy" with gate receipts traditionally being much lower on a Monday for most clubs across the board.

Long also notes the injuries he has to work with at the minute - eight first team players were missing heading into the game, while Michael Barker had to come off.

"It's a false economy really, when you look at it," he continued.

"Playing Friday/Monday, gates are down, receipts are down, as a result, although we've had a good crowd here tonight. You get spectacles like that.

"We're shorn of eight players here tonight. Our supporters come to watch their team play and they want to see our best players playing, but injury and fatigue have restricted what we could do tonight.

"I think we need to, as a league, as clubs, we need have a look at it. Definitely, we need to extend out the season because we can't continue.

"We've had two weeks off, and now we're playing three games in a week! It doesn't make sense.

"Common sense is not that common in our league at this moment in time, and we need to address these issues so we don't spectacles like that tonight."
