Former Newcastle United star Keith Gillespie has lashed out at the club for their lack of ambition.
Gillespie, who joined the club when United challenged for both the title and the domestic cups, feels that the fact United fans have been left to celebrate survival with three games to go is a sign of the times.
After Newcastle United officially safe in the Premier League - what happens now at St James' Park to title contenders Liverpool, Gillespie took to social media to express his views.
The ex-Northern Ireland star posted: "Congratulations to Newcastle United on securing Premier League safety.
"Shame that we have to celebrate something like this but that’s what happens when you have an owner with no ambition."
Managing director Lee Charnley has been criticised about ambition at United.
But he stated last week: "The idea we turn up every year just hoping to survive just isn't correct.
"We want to improve but do so sustainably.
"We want to be competitive at every level and in every competition."
