Keith Andrews sides with Leeds United over key talking point from Derby County win

Keith Andrews believes linesman Edward Smart was right to convince referee Craig Pawson to change his mind following the award of a Derby County penalty.

Pawson pointed to the spot after Jack Harrison was adjudged to have brought down Jayden Bogle inside the box, but the experienced official then reversed his decision and instead awarded a free-kick to Marcelo Bielsa's side following a conversation with Smart.

The call has sparked plenty of debate on social media, but Andrews, speaking on Sky Sports after the game, believes Pawson deserves credit for consulting with Smart - and between the pair they made the right call.

"This is so difficult. I’ve probably watched this ten times. Five times during the game," the former Ireland midfielder said after the game.

"Initially, it’s good play from Derby they’re just starting to get a grip. This is one of the first moments we’ve seen Bogle get into good areas.

Leeds United's Jack Harrison speaks out about controversial penalty decision against Derby County

"Tracks him really well Harrison, is it? So difficult to tell. This last angle, the contact, who initiates it? It’s so difficult to call because he’s dangling a leg. Does it come from Harrison or does it come from Bogle?

"I’d give the referee credit he’s gone and consulted his assistant. I like that. I think it takes a good bit of confidence to do that in a hostile environment with the players on you, being aggressive, in terms of both sides of the coin.

"I think the linesman has a better view of it. I think he’s looking right across and knows which way the legs are going. I’d have to sway towards the referees assistant, even without all the replays."

Leeds United will take a 1-0 lead into Wednesday's second-leg at Elland Road, after Kemar Roofe's 15th goal of the season was the difference between the two sides in the Midlands.
