Keiren Westwood fears he is being 'retired' out of Ireland squad

Keiren Westwood fears he is being retired from international duty and said: “I haven’t got the wool over my eyes.”

But the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper insists he will never quit Ireland even if he’s not being picked.

Westwood, 35, was named in a provisional squad for these games against New Zealand and Denmark but did not make the final cut.

Ongoing fitness issues led to Mick McCarthy going with inexperienced youngsters Kieran O’Hara and Mark Travers as cover for No 1 Darren Rondolph.

Capped 21 times, Westwood last played against Uruguay in 2017 and hasn’t been in the squad since the win over Georgia in March.

“I’m a realist, I haven’t got the wool over my eyes,” he said.

“Maybe international football is retiring me as we’ve got a lot of young lads coming through. It might be time now.

“I’ll always be there. I’m a big believer that I don’t think players should ever retire from international football. It’s your country that retires you.”
