Keir Starmer has blasted ministers for failing to ensure everyone knows the Government’s new rules on voter ID.
Up to 2.1 million voters face being barred from polling stations at May’s local elections because they lack approved documents, such as a passport.
The Daily Mirror has launched our Get ID, Get a Vote campaign to raise awareness.
Mr Starmer said: “The Government bears a heavy responsibility for making sure everybody understands they need ID and to encourage people to get registered for postal votes.
"Polling shows a number of members of the public don’t even know the rules have changed – that’s a government failure.”
Mr Starmer also urged ministers to look at changing the rule that young person’s railcards will not be accepted as ID, while pensioners’ bus passes will be.
Campaigners have accused the Tories of deterring young voters who are more likely to back Labour.
Mr Starmer said in in the meantime signing up for postal votes was “the surest way to ensure the voice of as many people as possible is heard”.
