Keir Starmer replaces third senior office aide in less than a year

Sir Keir Starmer is set to replace the third senior staff member from his office in less than a year.

The Prime Minister’s principal private secretary (PPS), Nin Pandit, is reportedly being let go after just 10 months running Sir Keir’s team in Number 10.

The senior civil servant is expected to move to another role in government after the PM became concerned she was ineffective in her role, the BBC reported.

Downing Street refuted the suggestions and allies of Sir Keir told the broadcaster that he retained trust and confidence in her.

Ms Pandit is the third senior aide to the Prime Minister to have been let go in a year.

Sue Gray left as the PM’s former chief of staff in October and director of communications Matthew Doyle stood down in March.

Ms Gray, a former senior civil servant who ran the “party gate” inquiry into Boris Johnson, said she quit because she feared she was “becoming a distraction” to Sir Keir Government.

But there were reports of tensions in Number 10 involving Ms Gray, including between her and chief adviser Morgan McSweeney who succeeded her in the role.

Ms Pandit's appointment as principal private secretary was announced by Downing Street in the same press release that marked Ms Gray's departure.

She remains in post as PPS, Number 10 said, and there was no comment on when her exact departure would be.

The PPS is seen as one of the top jobs in the civil service and seen as a precursor to running major government departments.

Those in the role control the flow of information to the Prime Minister and their diary and are often in the room for major Government decisions.

They sit alongside the PM’s chief of staff in Number 10.

Ms Pandit previously ran the Downing Street policy unit during Rishi Sunak's premiership and had also been chief of staff to the chief executive of NHS England.
