Keir Starmer leaves self-isolation after his child tests negative for coronavirus

Keir Starmer is able to leave self-isolation after one of his children tested negative for coronavirus.

The Labour Leader had been told to stay at home while awaiting the results of a test for one of his kids.

Mr Starmer was still expected to miss Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, where his deputy Angela Rayner was due to step in against Boris Johnson.

He said: "I'm very pleased and relieved that the test result for one of my children came back negative this morning.

"Thank you to the NHS hospital where my wife works for ensuring that their staff and family members have quick access to a test.

"However, I know the situation is desperate at the moment for thousands of families across the country who are struggling to get a test.

"They deserve answers and for this problem to be fixed."

Mr Starmer went into isolation shortly after doing a radio phone-in on Monday.

Shadow Business Secretary Ed Miliband stood in for the Labour leader during the fractious Internal Market Bill debate while the Starmer family awaited the results.

It is understood that Mr Starmer's child was able to get an immediate test as his wife works for an NHS hospital, where the staff are entitled to prompt Covid-19 tests for themselves and their families.

A number of politicians have been struck down by the virus, including Health Secretary Matt Hancock and Mr Johnson, who spent several nights in intensive care.
