Keir Starmer campaigning with Bristol Labour candidates - but one has been left out

Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer is in Bristol today (November 13) campaigning for Labour candidates.

But it looks like he is only helping three of the four candidates for the city.

Sir Keir tweeted this morning to say he was on a train leaving London Paddington and heading to Bristol to campaign with the Labour Party’s “great” parliamentary hopefuls.

He then went onto name Karin Smyth, who is a candidate for Bristol South, Kerry McCarthy in Bristol East and Thangam Debbonaire in Bristol West.

However Bristol North West Labour candidate Darren Jones was not included in the tweet.

Bristol South and Bristol East are both considered relatively safe seats for Labour - in fact Bristol South has had only Labour MPs since the 1930s.

Thangam Debbonaire increased her majority in 2017 and won 65 per cent of the vote - this was the fourth largest majority by vote size nationally.

However, this election Ms Debbonaire faces an increased Green threat now the Lib Dems have stood aside to prevent the Remain vote from splitting - and it could be a closely fought race.

However, Bristol North West candidate Darren Jones is probably most at risk of losing his seat out of all Labour’s Bristol candidates

The constituency has flip-flopped between Labour and the Tories for years. Mr Jones took the seat from the Conservatives in the 2017 election with 50.7 per cent of the vote compared to Charlotte Leslie’s 42 per cent.

But it is predicted Mr Jones could lose quite a large section of his vote share to the Lib Dems.

Which makes it somewhat surprising that Sir Keir is not spending his time campaigning in the Bristol North West constituency.

A spokesperson from the Labour Party said there was not enough time for Sir Keir to visit all four Bristol constituencies as he needs to get back to London.

Mr Jones said: “It’s always difficult to visit multiple campaigns during a short visit. Keir has been a champion in Parliament in supporting those of us who have always called for a Remain-led Peoples Vote.

“And whilst he was unable to visit my patch today, I’m grateful for him raising our Brexit policy in Bristol today.”
