Keir Starmer and Boris Johnson lead tributes to Jo Cox on fifth anniversary of her death

Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer led tributes to murdered MP Jo Cox on the fifth anniversary of her death.

Mrs Cox, 41, was shot and stabbed in her Batley and Spen constituency a week before the Brexit referendum in 2016.

A right-wing extremist was later jailed for life for her killing.

MPs came together in Parliament to remember the mum-of-two today.

The Prime Minister told the Commons: “My thoughts and I'm sure those of the whole House are with her family and friends."

Speaking at the start of Prime Minister's Questions, Labour leader Mr Starmer said: "Today is the fifth anniversary of the death of our dear friend and colleague Jo Cox.

“Jo had already changed so many lives for the better, she was passionate about creating a fairer, more just world."

He added: “I know she would have gone on to achieve so much more and that she would have been so proud of the work of her foundation and what it's doing in her name.

“Jo and I were in the same intake into this House, we were friends and our children around the same age.

“There's not a day that goes by when we don't miss Jo, and I know I speak not just for these benches but for many across the House when I say that today we remember Jo."

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle told MPs: "We will never forget Jo or her legacy.

“We remember her wise words – 'We have far more in common than that which divides us'."
