If you thought portable CD players disappeared along with flip phones, think again. Audiophile brand Cayin has unveiled the CP6, a portable CD player that doesn't just embrace physical media but celebrates it with vacuum tubes, Class A amplification and enough premium audio tech to make streaming feel positively bland.
At first glance it looks like an upscale Discman, but the similarities end there. Inside are a pair of military-grade Raytheon JAN6418 vacuum tubes, allowing listeners to switch between three different sound profiles. You can choose a classic warm tube sound, a cleaner modern tube tuning or a solid-state transistor mode, depending on your music or mood.
There's plenty here for headphone enthusiasts too. The CP6 includes both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced outputs, with a fully balanced Class A headphone amplifier built in.
It also houses a high-resolution DAC capable of handling digital audio from external devices, effectively doubling as a premium desktop DAC when you're not spinning discs.
Modern touches haven't been forgotten either. Bluetooth 5.4 works both ways, meaning you can stream music to wireless headphones or use the player as a Bluetooth DAC for your phone. There's also optical and coaxial digital output if you'd rather hook it into a full hi-fi setup.
Weighing around 850g, this is more luxury transportable than genuinely portable, and its premium aluminium chassis makes no attempt to hide that fact. But that's the point. The CP6 is designed for listeners who still enjoy the ritual of choosing an album, opening the jewel case and pressing play.
At around $899 (roughly £660), it's a niche product. Yet with CD sales continuing to stabilise and collectors rediscovering physical media alongside vinyl, the CP6 feels surprisingly well timed.
It may not replace Spotify for your morning commute, but it makes a strong case for compact discs having plenty of life left in them.
