Keeping NSW jobs the goal of second coronavirus stimulus package

The NSW Government will today unveil its second round of economic measures in an attempt keep people in jobs, as the coronavirus outbreak continues to impact the state.

It's a much smaller package than the $2.3 billion stimulus announced last week.

The Government plans to set up a fund to try to sustain businesses as well as retain and create jobs.

It's allocated $750 million in new money to the fund, which will contribute to employing the extra 1,000 staff for Service NSW announced by the Premier earlier this week.

The package also contains more tax relief for businesses.

Pubs, clubs and hotels won't have to pay gaming tax for six months, but only on the condition the extra cash allowed them to keep staff on.

Lotteries tax too would be deferred.

Small commercial businesses, with less than 20 employees, which lease Government-owned buildings would also have their rental payments deferred for six months.

"Our expectation is that any relief provided by the NSW Government will be used to contribute to help businesses stay in business and people stay in jobs," Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said.

"It's vital we keep people employed and ensure we have the ability to rebound when things improve."

The package also includes $80 million for those facing significant financial hardship because of the crisis.

As part of it, it's allocated $34 million to help prevent homelessness and $10 million for charities.

"When you combine this announcement with last week's stimulus package the NSW Government is ensuring billions are available to help business, support jobs, boost our health system and protect the vulnerable," Mr Perrottet said.
