Keeping it real

More news of Michael Howard's pledge to promise only the possible. In keeping with the Conservatives' timetable for action – "what we'll do, when we'll do it," according to the Tory leader – the party is ditching William Blake's hymn Jerusalem from its end-of-conference finale.

Mr Howard, it seems, can't promise to build Jerusalem on England's green and pleasant land, let alone deliver any vote-grabbing tax cuts. Delegates will have to make do with waving their union jacks along to Elvis's A Little Less Conversation instead.
