Generous Guardian readers have helped us raise nearly £20,000 in the first 24 hours of refugee charity appeal.

It’s a brilliant start to the campaign, which you can support and donate to here.

It’s also a great testimony to how much people care about the cause and want to stand together with people some of the world’s most vulnerable people .

One of the charities we are partnering with, Red Cross, have this short video about the challenge of keeping families together during the refugee crisis.

With so many obstacles to overcome, families travelling together inevitably become separated on the hopeful road to safety.

As this video highlights, the Red Cross is helping refugees and migrants find missing loved ones and stay in touch with relatives back home through its Restoring Family Links service.

This works with the charity having regular contact with unaccompanied and separated children, who wish to find their family overseas.
