Conservationists and citizens have good reason for the current outrage over the recent poaching case at Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary. The shooting of the extremely rare black leopard in itself was a despicable act. Skinning and eating the big cat, as well as killing a deer and pheasant, showed a contempt for the law, nature and sheer decency. Worried about a whitewash, the country's best-known conservationist wants to organise a major public demonstration of concern.
The conservationist mulling where, when and if to hold the rally is Sasin Chalermlarp. He is chairman of the Seub Nakhasathien Foundation and his work on behalf of nature is admirable. Like every rational Thai, Mr Sasin has concerns about the black leopard case. He is not alone in fearing the influence of the chief suspect in the case could impede the course of justice.
That suspect is Premchai Karnasuta. He and three companions were arrested by park authorities on Feb 4. The report of his arrest contains gruesome details and photos of the slaughter of the leopard, evidence that part was cooked and eaten. Guns and camping equipment alone made the presence of the four men illegal. But it was not just another weekend camping trip that outraged public opinion and Mr Sasin.
