Keep the trick driving for the track: police

Police have warned car enthusiasts attending Summernats that road rules will be enforced outside the motoring festival.

As thousands of revelers descend on Canberra for the annual event, ACT Policing Operational Commander for Summernats, Station Sergeant Adrian Craft, urged motorists to take care driving around the city, particularly given reduced visibility caused by lingering bushfire smoke.

"We remind drivers that there is never a place for speeding, anti-social behavior, or drug or drink driving and we'll have police out targeting those doing the wrong thing," Detective Station Sergeant Craft said.

Temperatures are set to soar across the ACT on Saturday, with the forecast maximum expected to reach 42 degrees before a milder 27 degrees on Sunday.

Detective Station Sergeant Craft said in the hot conditions people should take care and know their limits.

"We know that everyone that is here for Summernats is here to have a good time," he said.

"We ask that people do this responsibly and think about the consequences of their actions on not only themselves but the families around them."

"We will have officers patrolling ... Canberra, including the entertainment precincts due to the increased number of people out and about," he said.
