Keep the heid over coronavirus and don't be swayed by panic merchants

We have been warned there could be a rapid rise in coranavirus cases in Scotland in the coming days.

So it is vital everyone continues to follow the basic hygiene advice and take every step possible to contain the outbreak.

But it is also important we carry on with our lives and keep things in perspective.

Our story of the retired businessman who felt unwell when he returned from overseas should be heeded.

The 74-year-old did the responsible thing but was left angered by some of the responses he described as “panic”.

There was an overeaction to his condition which, thankfully, turned out not to be related to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Every potential case must be taken seriously to limit the impact of the virus, which looks like being with us for some time. But we must be sensible and measured.

There is no need for the stockpiling or panic-buying we have seen elsewhere.

We must take every precaution necessary but we must also, as the old saying goes ... keep the heid.

Listen and learn

The argument for mobile drug consumption rooms has been strengthened by Nathan Sparling’s support.

As chief executive of HIV Scotland, he is well placed to see the damage caused by a system that too often looks the other way.

The Daily Record has consistently advocated treating Scotland’s drug death crisis as a public health issue.

It has been heartening to see the SNP Government support many common sense ideas backed by experts.

We all know how little valued expert opinion is by the current crop of Tories, so perhaps it is no surprise they continue to ignore people like Nathan.

DCRs are not a new idea and no one is pretending they will provide a miracle cure to a real life problem – but they can make a difference.

Glasgow has seen a rise in HIV cases but this kind of pro-active approach can help reduce the numbers.

Nathan’s is the latest voice to add to the clamour for change. How long can this abject Conservative Government turn a deaf ear?
