Keep Scotland Beautiful judges visit Bothwell and Uddingston

Judges from Keep Scotland Beautiful visited Uddingston Pride and Brighter Bothwell as they were entered into the prestigious competition once again.

After a presentation to the judges, about the work carried out by the groups throughout the year, the judges were taken on a tour of the areas.

Last year both groups were recognised at the awards, with Brighter Bothwell winning gold.

The group, which has been running successfully for 19 years, were delighted to win the Gold Medal Award, trophy for Best Small Town, and the Haddington 700 Award for Bothwell Horticultural Society.

Brighter Bothwell are famous for their colourful floral displays along the main street and a good variety of well cared for public open green spaces. Brighter Bothwell works effectively with other sections of the community throughout the year, and the organic community garden and their work with young people are especially noteworthy.

Uddingston Pride were also recognised last year and walked away as the Urban Community Category Award winner and was also presented with the Jim Murdie Trophy for Sustainability.

The group was commended for its work at Viewpark Allotments and Gardens, which is a thriving space utilised by a wide section of the community. With environmental awareness high on the agenda, the allotments have a stunning wildflower meadow, hedgehog houses, bug hotels and use recyclable materials.

Uddingston Pride was founded in 2000, with the aim of improving the appearance of the community of Uddingston by decorating its streets with attractive floral displays and by maintaining a tidy and litter-free environment.

A spokesperson for Uddingston Pride said: “Special thanks to everybody who has helped keep the village looking beautiful and to James Meechan and men of the land services team at South Lanarkshire Council.”

A spokesperson for BrighterBothwell said: “We would like to thank all our willing volunteers who help us to make sure that Bothwell looks bright all year round, and particularly in the days before the judges’ visit. Special thanks are also due to the South Lanarkshire Council teams who support our work.”

The results will be known on September 12, at the award ceremony in Dumfries.
