In a bid to maintain the high standards and authenticity of Thai food offered by restaurants abroad, the Ministry of Commerce, via the Department of International Trade Promotion, this month launched the "ThaiSelect" campaign.
The department gives the impression that such a campaign is needed because some overseas restaurateurs are cheating by misrepresenting to customers what is "genuine" Thai food.

It explained on its website: "There are approximately 15,000 Thai restaurants around the world. However, due to their huge popularity, many restaurants overseas try to attract customers by naming their places 'Thai restaurant' or serving Thai food [when in fact] many of them do not even have Thai food on their menus."
