Keelings won't confirm how Bulgarian fruit pickers are housed and how much they earn

Fruit distribution company Keelings has declined to confirm how 189 Bulgarian fruit pickers are housed and how much they are paid.

The Dublin-based brand faced backlash last week after concern was raised over the risk to public health after a commercial Ryanair flight arrived in Ireland with the workerrs.

Keelings said it needed to employ people from other countries because it did not receive enough job applications from those residing here.

The company told RTE that the seasonal workers were adhering to the required HSE movement guidelines and said food was being delivered to workers.

The statement said: “For the period of the 14-day restricted movement we are ensuring now that groceries are being delivered to them."

And it added the workers would be paid in full for the two week isolation period but would not disclose the rate of pay.

Keelings said all workers are protected by local employment legislation including EU working time directives.

The company did not disclose how the seasonal workers were being accommodated - if they were in single rooms while in isolation.

The statement to RTE said it has a duty of care to employees and wouldn’t disclose where they were living.

Last Friday, the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said he was uncomfortable about transporting workers from other countries - a view echoed by the Taoiseach and Health Minister Simon Harris.

Keelings said: “We will continue to do our best to recruit locally in Ireland and will follow, to the letter, what is required by the Government, HSE and HPSC and will engage in any new rules or guidelines.”
