The stakes are different now for John Wick. The first film in the franchise had the legendary hitman avenging the death of his dog, and the second had him being pulled back into an underworld that he was desperate to leave, but now, in John Wick 3: Parabellum, the deadly assassin is the one who is vulnerable.
“He’s being hunted, so he’s desperate,” Keanu Reeves said of the new twist on the character. “John is suffering the consequences of his actions and he’s vulnerable.”
One thing Reeves also appreciates is the diversity of the franchise, which now includes a groundbreaking role for gender non-binary actor Asia Kate Dillion, who plays The Adjudicator.
“It’s important in life, and in art, to have that diversity,” he said. “The world of John Wick, has a lot of opportunity for humans and it was great to have all of these wonderful artists join that world,” Reeves said.
