'Kean’s final contribution' - national media react to Everton's win vs Huddersfield Town

Andros Townsend's first Everton goal helped his side to victory over Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup.

Summer signing Townsend turned home Andre Gomes' cross with 11 minutes left to seal his side’s spot in the third round.

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Blues, who took the lead through Alex Iwobi on 26 minutes.

Tom Lees' header on the stroke of half-time drew Carlos Corberan’s side level at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Moise Kean was then sent off for the Blues in the second half before Townsend struck 20 minutes later to secure his side victory.

The draw for the third round takes place tonight and here is a look at how the national media reported on the game.

'They do nothing the easy way'

Ross Heppenstall of The Telegraph wrote: “Quite what Rafael Benitez is capable of achieving as Everton manager remains to be seen but, three games into his reign, the signs are positive.

“Everton remain unbeaten under the former Liverpool boss and, having survived the 59th-minute dismissal of Moise Kean, can now look forward to a place in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

“They do nothing the easy way, though, and it needed a late goal from Andros Townsend, a free transfer summer signing, to break the spirit of a Championship side and give Benitez’s 10-man team victory.

“Carlos Corberan’s Terriers pushed the Toffees all the way after Tom Lees’ 45th-minute header cancelled out Alex Iwobi’s opener before Townsend’s 79th-minute strike proved decisive.

“As Benitez conducted his post-match media duties at pitchside, a small knot of boisterous Everton supporters in the home stands serenaded the Spaniard with chants of ‘Rafa is our gaffer’.”

'The headline is that Everton are into round three'

Aaron Bower of the Guardian wrote: “The headline is that Everton are into round three of the Carabao Cup after Andros Townsend’s late strike was enough to put away a gamely spirited effort from Championship side Huddersfield Town. But that does little to explain the story of the match itself, or the questions Benítez will likely now have answers to about several members of his squad.

“Chief among them is Moise Kean, whose confrontation with Sorba Thomas midway through the second half led to him receiving a straight red card that almost cost Everton their place in the third round. “He has to learn from that,” Benítez said of the 21-year-old’s moment of madness. With speculation lingering over a move away, you wonder if this could yet be Kean’s final contribution in an Everton shirt.

“But on a night when Jean-Philippe Gbamin started his first game in over 730 days, the result was not the only positive for Benítez. “The fans can see that we’re trying to improve every player, and they see that we’re fighting for our club,” he said.

“Benítez may also have raised a smile post-match as a clutch of Everton fans still inside the stadium as he conducted his media duties began chanting his name. How he will hope that trend continues in the weeks and months ahead.”

'To the fury of Everton’s players'

Joe Bernstein of the Daily Mail wrote: “Fresh from playing alongside Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, Moise Kean’s miserable time at Everton sunk to a new low as he was sent off at the John Smith’s.

“Though Rafa Benitez’s side squeezed past battling Huddersfield with a late winner from Andros Townsend, poor Kean will be wondering when his luck is going to change.

“Loaned to PSG last season to regain his mojo, the £25million striker was granted his first Everton start for a year only to have a goal disallowed – despite being onside - and then received a controversial red card when he squared up to Huddersfield’s Sorba Thomas.

“Kean had been caught by the defender after 59 minutes and turned around to confront him with a barge into the chest.

“To the fury of Everton’s players, referee Matthew Donohue decided there was sufficient force in the retaliation with a raised hand to order the 21-year-old from the pitch.

“In the circumstances, the Premier League side will be relieved to remain in the competition. They have never won the League Cup and not lifted any trophy since 1995.”
