SEOUL -- North Korea's state news agency criticized the Japanese government Saturday for urging a resolution to the issue of Pyongyang's abductions of Japanese nationals, claiming that the issue has already been resolved.
U.S. President Donald Trump plans to raise the issue at the U.S.-North Korea summit to be held in Singapore on June 12, in response to a request by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The Korean Central News Agency's statement appears to be a warning to Tokyo ahead of the summit in light of its strong calls for a resolution to the abduction issue.
In its condemnation of Japan, KCNA contended that revisiting what the agency claims to be a settled matter is foul, foolish and shameful behavior intended to hinder the ongoing current of peace on the Korean Peninsula, which the international community welcomes.
It also referred to Japan's colonial rule over the peninsula by asserting that the nature of the Japan-North Korea relationship is that of an aggressor and victim.
KCNA continued its criticism, arguing that the harm Korean people incurred as a result of what the agency described as Japan's criminal history can never be compensated for, even if Japan was to offer the whole country in restitution.
It maintained that Tokyo's demand for a solution to the abduction issue is a bid to evade settlement of the past.
