Wales beat Kazakhstan 1-0 in Astana on Thursday to move two points clear at the top of World Cup qualifying group J.
Craig Bellamy’s side dominated the early exchanges, with Sorba Thomas and Harry Wilson impressing as an energetic and composed Wales side imposed themselves on the game.
And their early dominance paid off mid-way into the first half when a great delivery from Wilson was headed on and parried to Kieffer Moore, who opened the scoring with a tap-in from six yards.
The visitors were unable to press home their advantage in the first half and Kazakhstan came out fighting in the second period, with Galymzahn Kenzhebek notably forcing a superb save from Karl Darlow.
Nevertheless, the Wales defence held firm throughout and while they were unable to find the net again, the visitors closed the door and take home the three points after a nervy ending.

Williams: 'One of the worst performances defensively'
18:00 , Chris WilsonWilliams says the game was “probably one of the worst performances defensively I have seen under Craig Bellamy”.
“But he will be relieved and he will probably praise the boys' character.
“We have said many times in international football, you expect to go and steamroll a team like Kazakhstan and it doesn't happen.
“But we have the win, it's job done.
“Nobody is going to remember this performance if we qualify,” he adds.
Davies: 'The most important thing was to win'
17:50 , Chris WilsonWales captain Ben Davies says that "the most important thing was to win the game” today.
“It wasn't our best performance, but these are tough places to come and to walk away with three points is exactly what we wanted.
"If you want to get to a World Cup, you play tough games, and none of them are easy. On paper people will look at Kazakhstan and think we should be dominating the game and scoring a couple of goals but it's never going to be easy.
"Belgium is obviously the biggest game we have going forward, but we came here and put ourselves in a position that it is an important game, as far as I'm concerned, job done tonight,” he adds.
More from Wilson
17:40 , Chris Wilson"Second half they pressed a lot higher, they went man for man at times and we found it difficult,” says Wilson.
"But I think we showed that while we can win games playing well, but we can win games playing ugly as well.
"After the game in Brussels, we showed we can score goals against the best of teams and we know with the Red Wall behind us we're capable of beating anyone so we have to make sure we do that next month."
Wilson: 'A valuable three points'
17:30 , Chris WilsonSpeaking to BBC, Harry Wilson calls it a "valuable three points” earned today.
“That was a really tough game. I thought we started pretty well, controlled the game, obviously it was really nice to get the goal early on to settle us in.
"But they showed on more than one occasion that they're a dangerous team. We really had to stick together and it was a bit nervy at the end,” he added.
Next up
17:20 , Chris WilsonWales’ next two fixtures are both friendlies, due to the nature of scheduling in their five-team qualifying group.
They play Canada in Swansea on Tuesday to end this international break, before facing England at Wembley on 9 October.
But the big one comes against Belgium in Cardiff on 13 October, with that match potentially deciding who finishes top of Group J (and therefore who secures automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup).
FULL-TIME! Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales
17:10 , Chris Wilson“Wales will be disappointed with the overall performance, but you get the three points and get out of there. It's job done”, says former Wales midfielder Joe Ledley on BBC.
“We got the three points and that's the main thing,” adds Ashley Williams.

FULL-TIME! Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales
17:01 , Chris WilsonWell, a potentially vital three points for Wales as they look to qualify for back-to-back World Cups.
It was a good performance overall, with Lawlor, Thomas and Wilson particularly impressive.
Though it was shaky at the end, the importance of a win in a game like this cannot be overstated for Craig Bellamy and his side.
FULL-TIME! Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales

Oh my word! Muzhikov’s free-kick clips the crossbar and that is the final action of the game!
Full-time and Wales take a deserved three points in truth.

Davies’ clearance turns into a lovely ball forward but Wilson chooses to go to the corner flag as Wales look to see it out.
The gap opens up for Wales though and James and Wilson exchange passes in the box, but the latter ends up penalised for handball.
Kazakhstan launch one final attack and Wales fail to clear it, with Cabango bringing the attacker down right on the edge of the area!

Yet another example of great defending from Lawlor today as he shepherds the attacker off the ball in the box before clearing.
Kazakhstan come again but the ball to the back post is just out of reach of Zhumat.

SAVE! Good stuff from Darlow.
Kazakhstan counter and it’s led by Samordov, who has the time to look up and rifle a low effort to the near post, but Darlow is down well to put it behind.
Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales
16:32 , Chris Wilson72 mins
Superb defending from Lawlor here. Kazakhstan break into the box as Satpaev lays off the ball, but Lawlor is there to divert the low cross away from danger, before Wales get a break as they win a free-kick from the corner.

Think Bellamy and co. will be delighted to see the back of Kenzhebek, who was definitely the hosts’ most dangerous player. Perhaps he’s picked up a knock.
Wales come again and Wilson makes a great run into the box, with Thomas’ ball almost reaching him before Anarbekov is off his lions quickly to divert the danger.
Wilson is penalised for the challenge on the Kazakh ‘keeper.
Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales

First subs of the day then, as Daniel James comes on for Johnson and Mark Harris takes the place of Kieffer Moore.
The hosts make a change too, with Kenzhebek coming off for Chesnokov. That is not a change I’d have made!
Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales
16:23 , Chris Wilson63 mins
Wales have settled a bit in the last few minutes, and they’re starting to string some passes together in the final third again.
It ends with Williams putting in the cross, but it runs out of play.

End-to-end football at the moment, and Wales get lucky here.
It all comes from Kenzhebek again, as he shimmies his way through a couple of challenges in the box but fires just wide as he loses his balance.
Darlow barely moved there!

CLOSE! What a save this is from Darlow.
Wales are struggling a lot more at the start of this half, as the hosts come forward again with a period of sustained pressure.
Williams fails to deal with a cross properly and it runs out to Kenzhebek, who lines up the shot from distance and curls a superb effort that Darlow is forced to tip onto the bar at full stretch.

16:04 , Chris WilsonWales get the second half started.
HALF-TIME! Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales
16:00 , Chris WilsonA decent half for the visitors, who lead and were deserving of the goal they got.
Good performances from several players, Thomas and Wilson especially, and Wales have control in this game. They were a few warnings from the hosts but Bellamy’s side know they should win this game, and they will if they continue to perform as they did in the first period.
The players will be back onto the pitch in Astana soon.

Cheers as the hosts come forward there, led by Satpaev, before it comes to Kenzhebek, who sees a shot blocked. It rebounds out to Kassym, but he fires well wide.
One minute of added time to come.

Mepham’s drive from distance is saved easily but Wales regain possession right away, before Wilson wins a free-kick near shooting range.
It’s around the same distance Szoboszlai scored from at the weekend (probably less), so it can be done!
Wilson hits it into the wall anyway.
Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales
15:43 , Chris Wilson39 mins
CLOSE! Almost an equaliser.
Kenzhebek wins the ball from Williams right on the edge of the area. Wales want the foul but the referee isn’t interested, and Kenzhebek drives into the area before opening up his body and curling an effort a whisker wide of the far post. Great attempt from the youngster.
Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales
15:40 , Chris Wilson37 mins
Another dangerous run from Williams but he’s tackled just before he can slip the pass through.
More possession for the visitors, though they’re unable to find an opening.

Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales
15:37 , Chris Wilson34 mins
It’s been more even since the goal, with Wales pressing less now that they don’t have the need for a goal. They’re happy to let the hosts come at them for now.
Kazakhstan have been increasing in confidence, though another counter ends without a shooting opportunity. Just a lack of quality in the final third so far.
Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales
15:36 , Chris Wilson31 mins
Almost an opening as Wiliams and Johnson exchange passes near the area, before Sheehan concedes a foul to stop the counter.

From the corner, Samorodov’s delivery goes out on the other side after some good defending from Williams.
GOAL! Kazakhstan 0-1 Wales

GOAL! A great set-piece delivery ends in the opening goal.
It’s such a good free-kick from Wilson, with Cullen’s flick-on at the near post equally as good.
The ‘keeper saves Cullen’s initial header but he can only parry it straight out to Moore, who taps in easily to open the scoring.
Kazakhstan 0-0 Wales
15:27 , Chris Wilson24 mins
CLOSE! This looked very close, but we’ll have to see a replay.
The corner comes in and it’s headed back across goal . It looks like it’s headed into the far corner but it’s cleared and there’s some pinball in the box before Wilson is fouled on the wing.
Kazakhstan 0-0 Wales
15:25 , Chris Wilson22 mins
A decent amount of energy in this performance from Wales, and there are some nice combinations on show too. Nothing to open up the defence yet though, as Johnson sees another cross put behind after good work from Wilson.
Kazakhstan 0-0 Wales
15:21 , Chris Wilson19 mins
First real chance for the hosts as it breaks nicely in the Wales half and Kenzhebek picks it up. He sees the space open up in front of him but fires a shot straight at Darlow.

Thomas’ corner is a good one but it’s cleared to Sheehan, who hacks an effort well wide.

Kazakhstan 0-0 Wales
15:17 , Chris Wilson15 mins
Not a lot happening in terms of clear-cut chances, with Thomas finding himself double-marked on the left wing. Johnson hasn’t really been able to get into the game yet.
The former finds the Spurs man with a good cross though, and his shot is defected over for a corner.
Kazakhstan 0-0 Wales
15:13 , Chris Wilson12 mins
Thomas’ corner is headed away. The visitors regain possession immediately, but the through ball to Johnson runs long.
The hosts then enjoy their first real period of sustained possession, though it doesn’t last too long. A solid press on show from Wales so far.
Kazakhstan 0-0 Wales
15:11 , Chris Wilson9 mins
Wales have settled pretty well so far, and they’re knocking it around nicely. No rush from the visitors at the moment.
They keep the ball for an extended period, with almost the entire team touching the ball, before Johnson’s cross is nicked away from Moore and Davies’ shot is deflected behind for a corner.
Kazakhstan 0-0 Wales
15:08 , Chris Wilson6 mins
Lovely stuff from Kenzhebek as he cuts inside Williams before a superb backheel sets up Vorogovskiy for the cross, and it defects behind for a corner.
Wales deal with the set-piece well, though, and at the other end Thomas sees his cross cut out at the back post, narrowly missing Johnson.
Kazakhstan 0-0 Wales

Thomas delivers the first cross of the match but it’s headed away well, before Anarbekov picks up the follow-up.

Davies: 'We have to come into the game looking to be at our best'
14:45 , Chris WilsonSpeaking alongside Bellamy, Ben Davies said that “whoever we’re playing against, we have to come into the game looking to be at our best if we want to win”,.
“Kazakhstan showed in Cardiff that they are a difficult team to break down and we had to be patient. We expect another tough challenge tomorrow,” he explained.
“Joe [Rodon] is a big loss for us. He’s definitely a key figure in the team and has been for the last few years. But we’re confident as a team that whoever comes in has that quality.”
“There are boys who have been waiting patiently for their chance and really deserve it. They’ve shown when they’ve had those opportunities why they deserve to be playing, so we’re lucky in that sense that we have some strength in depth,” he added as he finished.
Bellamy: 'My part is to prepare (for) this type of scenario'
14:37 , Chris WilsonSpeaking ahead of the match, Craig Bellamy said that injuries weren’t an issue.
"I never talk about injuries because the simple fact is that it's reality of the game we're in. It won't have an effect on us, we'll be strong.”
On preparations, he added: “The FAW have done well, really made it comfortable for us.
"Time difference, we adjust. We've been working for this for a number of months, we knew this game was coming and you just have to adapt,” he added.

Craig Bellamy confident Wales can cope with lengthy list of absentees
14:25 , Chris WilsonCraig Bellamy says Wales can cope with a raft of absentees for their World Cup qualifier in Kazakhstan after key defender Joe Rodon joined the list of withdrawals.
Leeds centre-back Rodon played the full 90 minutes of the 0-0 Premier League draw against Newcastle on Saturday but did not make the 3,000-mile trip to Astana due to concussion protocols.
Injured pair Ethan Ampadu and Connor Roberts were not included when Bellamy named his squad last week, and skipper Aaron Ramsey was left out to build up fitness at his Mexican club Pumas UNAM after a five-month lay-off following hamstring surgery.

Wales leaving no stone unturned in planning for ‘challenging’ Kazakhstan trip
14:15 , Chris WilsonWales have prepared for their marathon World Cup qualifying trip to Kazakhstan by involving Craig Bellamy’s squad in “challenging” logistical planning for the first time.
Making the 6,000-mile round journey to and from Kazakhstan – the world’s largest landlocked country which borders Russia to the north and China to the east – presents a demanding test for the Football Association of Wales on several different levels.
Finding a suitable aircraft to get to Central Asia and back by avoiding Russian air space, the four-hour time difference, and potential hot weather are among the issues facing Wales in Astana on September 4.

Team news
13:55 , Chris WilsonWe’re expecting line-ups to be announced soon, so here’s a reminder of the early team news...
Wales captain Ramsey has been left out of the squad by Bellamy, having only played his first minutes for new side Pumas Unam last week - his first appearance in nearly six months. Ethan Ampadu is also absent with a knee injury, while Dylan Lawlor, Ronan Kpakio and Kai Andrews could all make their first Wales caps.
Kazakhstan, meanwhile, are going through change in the dressing room after former captain Askhat Tagybergen, who scored in Cardiff, announced his retirement in June.
Craig Bellamy: Wrexham’s story can make Wales a stronger footballing nation
13:47 , Chris WilsonCraig Bellamy admits to being “captivated” by Wrexham’s story and believes the influence of Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac will benefit the Wales national side.
Wrexham signed Wales internationals Danny Ward, Kieffer Moore and Nathan Broadhead in the summer transfer window after going up to the Sky Bet Championship following three successive promotions.
Ward and Broadhead are expected to miss Thursday’s World Cup qualifier in Kazakhstan with injury.
But should Moore play in Astana he would become the first Wrexham player to represent Wales since Steve Evans in 2008 when the Red Dragons were a non-league club.

Key talking points
13:40 , Chris WilsonRed-hot attack
Wales are spoilt for choice when it comes to attacking options, with several forwards having started the season in good form.
Brennan Johnson scored in Tottenham’s first two Premier League games and David Brooks has shone for Bournemouth.
In the Championship, Kieffer Moore has found the net four times for new club Wrexham, and Sorba Thomas has two goals and three assists since joining Stoke this summer.
Key talking points
13:35 , Chris WilsonBouncing back from defeat
Wales boss Bellamy suffered the first loss of his tenure in June as Belgium shaded a seven-goal thriller in Brussels.
How Wales react to that 4-3 defeat – in which they trailed 3-0 before fighting back to level – will hold the key to keeping alive hopes of top spot and gaining automatic qualification for next summer’s World Cup finals.
Wales are currently on seven points, one behind North Macedonia having played half of their eight fixtures, while Belgium have four points from two games.
Key talking points
13:30 , Chris WilsonThe Wales men’s senior team have never ventured to Kazakhstan before, a 3,000-mile trip east and four hours ahead of Cardiff.
Such a marathon journey to central Asia presents significant logistical challenges, and Wales players and staff left their Vale of Glamorgan base a day earlier than is usual for away games to acclimatise in Astana.
Playing on an artificial surface at the Astana Arena will also present its own challenges.
