Kayleah Long 'so proud' of husband Shane's achievements as he leaves Southampton

Shane Long's wife says she is "so proud" of what he achieved during his time at Southampton.

It was announced on Friday that the Republic of Ireland striker was leaving the club after eight years at St Mary's.

The 35-year-old made 245 appearances in all competitions for the club, including 198 in the Premier League.

Reacting to the news on Instagram, Kayleah Long wrote: "And that’s a wrap…. So proud of what Shane has achieved at the 8years he has spent at @southamptonfc over 200 appearances, some memorable goals and one of them being the fastest goal in Premier league history!

"As you are aware, Shane isn’t on social media but he would like to thank all the fans for their support, the club and the staff for making all of the above happen and all the players he has had the privilege to play alongside!

"On that note, we have made friends for life at this club and will be forever grateful. Best of luck for the future saints. It’s been a pleasure."

Southampton said in a statement on Friday: "Everyone at Southampton Football Club would like to express their gratitude to Shane for his incredible dedication and service throughout his time at St Mary’s, and we wish him well for the future."

Meanwhile, Reading have registered their interest in bringing Long back to the Madejski Stadium.

The Tipperary native spent six years at Reading between 2005 and 2011, before moving to West Brom, Hull and then Southampton.

Reading can only sign loan players or free agents due to transfer restrictions in place.

Reading's head of football Mark Bowen told Berkshire Live: “Shane Long - I worked with him at Southampton and I've worked with Andre Gray as well - they are players we have looked at and continue to look at.

“It's in that complicated process - are they suitable for us as players first and foremost, are they suitable financially and it might come down to one or two players but they are players we are looking at at the moment.”
