Kayaker rescued by lifeboat crew after suffering head injury at St Mary's Island

A kayaker was left with a head wound after capsizing in the sea off the North Tyneside coast.

Two paddleboarders came across two men in the water next to their overturned kayak near St Mary’s Island just before 11.45am on Sunday.

The Coastguard was alerted and the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) and Cullercoats RNLI were paged to help rescue the men.

The lifeboat quickly made its way to the scene and the crew recovered the two men from the water.

One had sustained a minor head wound when the kayak capsized, as well as taking on a small amount of sea water.

Once the lifeboat brought the men and their kayak back to Cullercoats, Brigade members gave casualty care to the man with the head wound.

They then gave the pair a lift back to their vehicles at Whitley Bay.

A spokesperson for the TVLB said: "The men had limited safety equipment, notably a mobile phone they could not reach once capsized, and buoyancy aids, and so were advised to purchase a VHF radio and hand-held flares so that they could raise the alarm should they get into difficulty in the future."
