A man has died while kayaking with a group at Point Hut near southern Canberra.

Emergency services located the man at 6.20pm Sunday after starting a search operation about four hours earlier when the kayaker went missing.

The kayaker was separated from his group as the Murrumbidgee River's water levels were high during prolonged rainfall that hit the region at the weekend.

ACT Policing inspector Brett Booth said the water had been cold and fast flowing with obstacles underneath the surface when the man went missing.

Police later said in a statement the kayaker had been found dead, and his kayak had become stuck under a bridge.

ACT Policing will prepare a report for the coroner regarding the man's death.

ACT Policing officers, AFP Search and Rescue, AFP Water Police, ACT Fire and Rescue and ACT State Emergency Service personnel commenced a significant search operation in the Point Hut area and the Murrumbidgee River downstream.

Police are urging the public not to enter or play in flood waters or swollen rivers.

If you see someone in danger in floodwaters, call ACT Policing on 131 444. If the situation is life-threatening, call 000 immediately.
